Margaret River sits in the far south-west corner of Western Australia, about three hours from Perth, and it is genuinely one of the most beautiful regions in the country.
World-class surf breaks. Ancient karri forests. Limestone caves. Rolling vineyards producing some of Australia's best wine. And a community that has always had a relaxed, inclusive attitude toward dogs being part of the experience.
The Margaret River region is also home to significant national parks and some of Australia's most vulnerable wildlife. That combination of stunning natural environment and fragile ecosystem means that being a responsible dog owner here is not just good manners, it is genuinely important.

The national parks
Dogs are not permitted in Margaret River's national parks. This is not a guideline that gets loosely interpreted. The region's native fauna includes species that are genuinely threatened, and dogs represent a real danger to them even when on a leash.
A mother possum will abandon her young at the scent of a dog, even days after the dog passed through the area. The hooded plover, an endangered shorebird, nests on beaches in the region and dog presence during nesting season causes serious disruption to breeding.
The national parks and their beaches are the most spectacular parts of the Margaret River coast. They are also off limits. Know this before you arrive and plan your itinerary around the beaches and areas that do welcome dogs.
The wineries
The Margaret River wine region has over 200 cellar doors and a significant number of them welcome dogs. The challenge is that policies vary enormously and change without much notice.
The most reliable approach is to call ahead. A five minute phone call to confirm dog access saves a long drive to a closed door. The Margaret River Visitor Centre in the main township maintains an up-to-date list of dog-friendly wineries and is worth visiting on arrival.
Howard Park and Stormflower are consistently recommended by local dog owners for their lush lawns and relaxed outdoor areas. Swings and Roundabouts has a dedicated dog water station which tells you something about how seriously they take it. Woody Nook combines an award-winning cellar door with a dog-friendly cafe on the grounds.

The beaches
The beaches that permit dogs in the Margaret River region are genuinely beautiful. Gnarabup near Prevelly, Smiths Beach at Yallingup, and Busselton Dog Beach on Geographe Bay are the three to know.
Busselton Dog Beach is the most reliably off-leash option. The water at Geographe Bay is calm, clear, and safe for swimming. The bay-side beaches are also significantly warmer in winter than the exposed ocean coast.
Augusta, about 45 minutes south of Margaret River town, is worth a day trip. The Whale Trail foreshore walk starts at an off-leash beach section and the town itself is quiet, beautiful, and genuinely dog welcoming.
Practical tips
Genuinely pet-friendly accommodation in Margaret River, with proper fenced yards and inside dog access, is less abundant than you might expect for a major tourist region. Research and book early. Self-contained cottages and farm stays in the forest or vineyard surrounds are typically the best options for dogs.
The Margaret River region in summer is warm and can be genuinely hot. Shade, water, and early starts are essential. Never leave your dog in a car at a winery stop, temperatures in car parks can become dangerous within minutes.
The forest walks around the region are beautiful but some areas have 1080 baiting programs active for pest control. Check with the Shire of Augusta Margaret River for current baiting locations before planning bush walks.
