Queensland

Noosa Spit Dog Beach is the most central and most popular dog beach in the Noosa region. Off-leash, calm and shallow, ideal for all dog types. Sunshine Beach Dog Beach at the northern end near Noosa National Park is wider and better for surf-loving dogs. Marcus Dog Beach in Peregian runs from access points 38 to 47 and is the biggest stretch of dog beach in the region.

Gold Coast has nearly five kilometres of off-leash beach access when you know where to look. Palm Beach is the most popular with wide open spaces and designated off-leash areas. Tallebudgera Creek offers calm water ideal for dogs who prefer swimming to surf. Boathaven Beach near Airlie Beach is off-leash from 5:30am to 8:30am daily.

The Sunshine Coast has strong dog beach options at Buddina Beach off-leash 24 hours and Sunshine Beach North off-leash up to the Noosa National Park boundary.

New South Wales

Belongil Beach in Byron Bay is the top pick for northern NSW. Off-leash before 9am and after 4pm during warmer months. Big space, genuine freedom, and a well-established local dog culture.

Seven Mile Beach at Lennox Head is off-leash north of the surf club and is one of the most iconic stretches of dog beach in the state. Worth the short drive from Byron.

The NSW South Coast has strong options at Moruya Heads, Broulee, and Tuross Head. Less crowded than the northern beaches and genuinely beautiful.

Sydney has good dog beach options at Sirius Cove in Mosman, Taylors Bay, and various harbour beaches with designated off-leash areas. Always check current council rules as Sydney's dog beach rules update regularly.

Victoria

Brighton Dog Beach on Port Phillip Bay is a year-round off-leash haven with fenced beach and calm bay waters. One of Melbourne's most popular and well-facilitated dog beaches.

St Kilda Harbour is always a busy dog social spot. Expect crowds on weekends but genuinely good facilities.

Mornington Peninsula has multiple off-leash options including the Mount Martha Beach Walk which passes through four separate off-leash areas. Rye Dog Beach is reliable year-round. Flinders Dog Beach on the ocean side is more dramatic and less crowded.

The Great Ocean Road region has dog beaches at Anglesea and Torquay. Note that much of the Great Ocean Road corridor is national park where dogs are prohibited.

Sun Protection

Dog-Safe Sunscreen

Best for: Light-coated dogs, beach and summer travel

A dog-safe sunscreen for noses, ears, and exposed skin. Light-coated and short-haired dogs sunburn easily in Australian conditions. Human sunscreen is toxic to dogs, this is formulated for them.

Western Australia

Perth is one of Australia's most dog-friendly cities with over 20 dog beaches stretching more than 100 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline. Most northern suburbs beaches offer 24-hour off-leash access year-round.

City Beach is Perth's best-equipped dog beach with dedicated dog wash facilities, water stations, and waste bag dispensers. Calm clear water suitable for all dog swimming abilities.

North Beach has 24-hour off-leash access, calm shallow water ideal for anxious dogs, and is close to the excellent Flora Terrace cafe strip.

The Margaret River region has dog beaches at Gnarabup near Prevelly and Smiths Beach at Yallingup. Busselton Dog Beach on Geographe Bay is the most reliably off-leash option in the region.

South Australia

Adelaide has several good dog beach options along the metro coastline. Henley Beach has a beautiful stretch where dogs are welcome and the cafe scene nearby is excellent.

Moana Beach to the south of Adelaide is quieter, with good views and responsible dog owners. Multiple council-provided litter bag dispensers throughout.

The Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide has good options at Port Elliot and Middleton where surf and calm water beaches are both within easy reach.

The rules that apply everywhere

Time restrictions are the most commonly misunderstood aspect of Australian dog beaches. Most off-leash beaches have seasonal restrictions, peak period rules, or time windows that change throughout the year. The restriction at one beach does not apply to the next. Check the specific rules for the specific beach you are visiting before you arrive, not when you get there.

Shorebird nesting zones are enforced across many Australian beaches from September through February. Hooded plovers, little terns, and other ground-nesting shorebirds are protected species and dogs in nesting areas cause serious disruption. Respect all signage about nesting areas.

Salt water makes dogs sick if they drink too much of it. Always bring fresh water to the beach and offer it regularly. Dogs playing in surf will inevitably swallow some salt water and too much causes vomiting and dehydration.

Clean up every single time. The reason dogs are permitted on as many beaches as they are in Australia is because enough pet owners have maintained the standard. Every owner who does not clean up makes the case for banning dogs from that beach. It is not optional.

Quick reference
Do
Check the specific time restrictions for each beach before you arrive
Bring fresh water, salt water makes dogs sick if they drink too much
Visit early morning to beat the heat and the crowds
Respect all shorebird nesting zone signage, these birds are protected
Clean up every single time without exception
Check for seasonal rule changes, particularly during school holidays
Don't
Assume a beach is off-leash because you see other dogs off-leash
Enter shorebird nesting areas even if your dog is on a leash
Visit unprotected ocean beaches in Cairns and tropical Queensland without checking for crocodile safety
Let dogs swim in patrolled beach areas between the flags
Visit beaches adjacent to national parks assuming the same rules apply
Leave without cleaning up, it jeopardises beach access for every dog owner
