Canberra as a dog destination
Canberra is more dog friendly than most people expect. The city has an unusually high concentration of off-leash parks for a capital city, a large lake with foreshore walking, and a cool climate that makes it one of the better summer destinations for dogs who struggle in Queensland and NSW coastal heat.
It is not a beach destination. There are no ocean beaches within the ACT. But for dogs who enjoy open parks, wide trails, and a relaxed city pace, Canberra works well.
Lake Burley Griffin and the foreshore
Lake Burley Griffin is the centrepiece of Canberra and the foreshore path that runs around much of the lake is dog friendly on leash. The circuit around the lake is approximately 35 kilometres for the full loop, making it one of the longer urban walking options in Australia.
Fossil Beach and parts of the northern shore have more relaxed access and are popular with local dog owners. The lake itself is not suitable for swimming due to periodic blue-green algae warnings. Always check current algae alerts before allowing your dog near the water.
The Parliamentary Triangle area and the foreshore around the National Museum and National Gallery are good for morning walks with good paved paths and open space.
Off-leash parks and trails
The ACT has a well-distributed network of off-leash dog parks across its suburbs. Weston Park near Yarralumla has off-leash areas and is one of the most popular with Canberra locals. Dickson Off-leash Area, Glebe Park, and Haig Park in the inner north all have good facilities.
Stromlo Forest Park in the western suburbs has mountain biking trails where dogs are welcome on leash. The pine forest setting is beautiful and the trails are well maintained.
The Murrumbidgee River Corridor has walking and cycling paths where dogs are welcome on leash. The river corridor stretches across the western side of Canberra and offers some of the best natural walking in the ACT.
Day trips from Canberra
The Snowy Mountains are about two hours from Canberra and offer excellent dog friendly walking in the warmer months. Jindabyne has good dog friendly accommodation and the surrounding high country state forests permit dogs on leash.
Note that Kosciuszko National Park has specific dog access rules. Dogs are permitted on roads and in camping areas within the park but not on walking tracks. Check the NSW National Parks website for current access conditions before planning any Snowy Mountains walking.
Goulburn is about an hour north and has good dog friendly cafes and parks. The Big Merino and the surrounding farmland make for a good half day stop.
Blue-green algae warning
Lake Burley Griffin has periodic blue-green algae blooms, particularly in summer. Blue-green algae is toxic to dogs and can cause rapid liver failure after ingestion. Always check the ACT Government website for current algae alerts before any visit to the lake foreshore. When algae is present, keep your dog well away from the water. This is a genuine safety issue and not one to take chances with.
