New South Wales for dog owners

New South Wales stretches from the subtropical north coast through Sydney and down to the beautiful South Coast. It has some genuinely excellent dog friendly options when you know where to look.

The challenge in NSW is the same as in Victoria. The most spectacular scenery often sits inside national park boundaries where dogs cannot go. Understanding which land management authority manages which area is the key skill.

Northern NSW: Byron Bay and surrounds

Byron Bay is the standout dog destination in northern NSW. The town's culture is built around outdoor living and a community that has never been particularly interested in rules for their own sake. Dogs fit naturally.

Belongil Beach is off-leash before 9am and after 4pm during warmer months. Seven Mile Beach at Lennox Head is off-leash north of the surf club. Brunswick Heads nearby has calmer creek waters and a quieter pace.

The Farm at Byron Bay welcomes dogs on leash throughout the property. The hinterland through Bangalow has excellent dog friendly cafe stops and completely different scenery from the coast.

The Blue Mountains

The towns on the escarpment edge are some of the most beautiful and dog welcoming villages in regional NSW. Leura is the one to prioritise. The main street, the gardens, Sorensen's Glasshouse, The Wayzgoose for flowerpot scones.

The night-lit Katoomba Falls walk is 1.3 kilometres outside the national park boundary and illuminated from dusk until 10:30pm. Dogs are welcome on leash. It is genuinely extraordinary.

Always confirm whether a specific lookout or walk is managed by the council or NPWS before visiting.

The Hunter Valley and South Coast

The Hunter Valley is one of the few wine regions in Australia where taking your dog to a winery is genuinely welcomed. Classic Tours runs dedicated dog friendly winery tours. Bistro Molines has dogs welcome on the outdoor terrace.

The NSW South Coast from Wollongong to the Victorian border is one of the most underrated dog destinations in Australia. Broulee Beach has 24-hour off-leash access on the southern half. Tathra Beach is beautiful and dog friendly.

Sydney

Sydney has a good network of dog beaches concentrated around the harbour. Sirius Cove in Mosman, Taylors Bay, and various harbour beaches with designated off-leash areas are the main options.

The dog beach rules in Sydney update regularly. Check the specific rules for the specific beach before visiting.

The cafe culture in Sydney's inner suburbs including Surry Hills, Newtown, and Paddington is generally welcoming to dogs in outdoor areas.
