Why Western Australia is one of Australia's best states for dogs

Western Australia is genuinely one of the best states in Australia for travelling with a dog. Perth has over 100 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline with dog beach access, most of it available 24 hours year round. The Margaret River region is ranked the most dog friendly road trip route in Australia by density of dog friendly parks and beaches.

Perth: 100km of dog beaches

Perth is remarkable for dog owners. The Indian Ocean beaches stretching north from the city offer more than 100 kilometres of dog beach access, most of it 24-hour off-leash year round.

City Beach is the best equipped dog beach in Perth with dedicated dog wash facilities, water stations, and waste bag dispensers. The water is calm and clear, suitable for all swimming abilities.

North Beach has 24-hour off-leash access, calm shallow water ideal for anxious dogs, and easy access to the Flora Terrace cafe strip. It is consistently recommended by Perth locals as the most relaxed dog beach experience in the city.

The Margaret River region

The Cape to Cape route from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin through the Margaret River region has been independently assessed as the most dog friendly road trip in Australia. The highest density of dog friendly parks and beaches of any route in the country.

Gnarabup Beach near Prevelly and Smiths Beach at Yallingup are the standout dog beach options. Howard Park and Stormflower wineries have lush lawns and genuinely welcoming outdoor areas. Grape Escape runs dedicated dog friendly winery tours.

Note that Margaret River National Park is strictly off limits to dogs.

The South West: Albany, Denmark, and Esperance

The far South West including Albany, Denmark, and Esperance is one of the least visited and most beautiful parts of Australia. Albany has excellent dog beach access at Middleton Beach. Denmark has the Wilson Inlet foreshore walks and beautiful natural environment.

Esperance is remote but worth the drive. The beaches in the town area are dog friendly and almost always uncrowded. Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park is famously beautiful but dogs are not permitted.

Rottnest Island and practical notes

Rottnest Island is the famous quokka island off the Perth coast. Dogs are not permitted on Rottnest Island at any time. This is a hard rule worth knowing before planning any Perth coast trip with a dog.

The distances in Western Australia are unlike any other state. Plan around the distances and build in proper rest stops. The heat in WA is serious. Perth summers regularly hit 40 degrees. Manage heat carefully regardless of where you are travelling.
