Adelaide as a dog destination
Adelaide is consistently underrated as a dog destination. The city has good beach access along the metro coast, excellent parkland including Linear Park along the Torrens River, one of the few national parks in Australia that allows dogs, and quick access to Hahndorf and the wine regions that make South Australia famous.
The scale of Adelaide is more manageable than Sydney or Melbourne which makes navigating with a dog easier. The pace is more relaxed. And the culture around dogs in cafes and public spaces is genuinely welcoming.
Beaches
Adelaide has a string of beaches along its metropolitan coastline from Semaphore in the north to Moana in the south. Most have designated dog-friendly sections with time-based access.
Henley Beach is the most popular metro dog beach with good facilities and a vibrant foreshore cafe strip. Glenelg has dog access at the southern end of the beach and is the most tourist-friendly option with the tram connection from the city.
Seacliff and Brighton beaches in the southern suburbs have good off-leash access. Semaphore in the north has a relaxed pace and good dog access. Moana in the far south is quieter and less crowded than the central metro beaches.
Belair National Park
Belair National Park is thirteen kilometres south of Adelaide and one of the very few national parks in Australia that permits dogs on leash on walking trails. A vehicle entry fee of $12.50 applies.
The park has walking tracks through native bushland with wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, and emus. The Old Government House in the park is heritage-listed and the combination of accessible wildlife and manageable walking distance from the city makes it worth including on any Adelaide dog trip.
Parks and open spaces
Linear Park follows the Torrens River from the hills to the coast through the centre of Adelaide and is one of the best urban dog walking routes in Australia. The full route is approximately 30 kilometres but multiple access points allow sections of any length.
Parklands ring the Adelaide CBD and most sections allow dogs on leash with some off-leash sections. Rymill Park, Elder Park, and Veale Gardens are all accessible with dogs on leash and are beautiful.
The Adelaide Hills have good state forest walking and the Belair area has multiple parks and reserves with dog access outside the national park boundary.
Day trips
Hahndorf is forty minutes from Adelaide and the most dog-friendly main street in Australia. A half-day minimum, a full day if you include a winery visit.
McLaren Vale is also forty minutes south and the most dog-friendly wine region in South Australia. Wirra Wirra allows dogs inside the cellar door. DogRidge is named for obvious reasons.
The Fleurieu Peninsula beaches at Port Elliot and Middleton are an hour from Adelaide and excellent for a longer beach day than the metro options offer.
