Melbourne as a dog destination

Melbourne is consistently ranked one of the world's most liveable cities and for dog owners it lives up to that reputation. The city has an extraordinary network of parks, a strong cafe culture that genuinely welcomes dogs in outdoor areas, and some of the best dog beach access of any major Australian city.

The inner suburbs of Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond, and South Yarra all have strong dog cultures with multiple off-leash parks within easy walking distance. The bayside suburbs from St Kilda to Brighton and beyond have beach access and a relaxed pace that suits dogs well.

Best dog parks and off-leash areas

Princes Park in Carlton is one of the best inner-city off-leash areas in Melbourne. Large, well-maintained, and popular with the local dog community. The perimeter walk is approximately 3.2 kilometres.

Flemington Racecourse Reserve has a large off-leash area and is significantly less crowded than Princes Park. The Maribyrnong River trail adjacent to the reserve extends the walk considerably.

Kensington Banks Reserve is a popular local favourite with good facilities. Ruffey Lake Park in Doncaster has a dedicated off-leash dog area with a lake for swimming. Westerfolds Park in Templestowe has one of the best natural off-leash environments in the eastern suburbs.

Dog beaches in Melbourne

Brighton Dog Beach is the best-equipped dog beach in Melbourne with a fenced off-leash area, water stations, and dedicated facilities. The calm bay water suits all dog swimming abilities.

St Kilda Harbour has long been a popular dog social spot, particularly on weekend mornings. The off-leash area at the harbour is busy but well-established.

Mordialloc, Aspendale, and Carrum beaches along the bayside have off-leash sections that are less crowded than the inner-bay options. Good for dogs that prefer more space.

On the Mornington Peninsula side of the bay, multiple off-leash beaches are accessible as day trips from Melbourne including Rye and Mount Martha.

Dog friendly cafes

Melbourne's cafe culture is outstanding and dogs are generally welcome in outdoor areas across the inner suburbs.

Fitzroy and Collingwood have the highest concentration of genuinely dog-welcoming cafes in the city. Smith Street and Johnston Street both have multiple options with good outdoor seating that regularly has water bowls set out.

St Kilda has excellent dog-friendly cafe options along Acland Street and the esplanade. The combination of proximity to the harbour off-leash area and good cafe culture makes St Kilda an excellent Melbourne dog day.

Prahran and South Yarra have strong outdoor cafe culture along Commercial Road and Chapel Street with multiple dog-welcoming options.

Day trips from Melbourne

The Mornington Peninsula is the standout Melbourne day trip for dog owners. The bay beaches, dog-friendly wineries, and Miss Drew's Dog Cafe in Tyabb make it worth a full day rather than just a few hours.

The Dandenong Ranges have dog-friendly walking in state forest areas adjacent to the national park. The village of Olinda and the surrounding area has good cafe culture and accessible walking.

The Yarra Valley wine region has excellent dog-friendly cellar doors including Maddens Rise and Helen's Hill. About an hour from the CBD and easily combined with the Healesville Sanctuary area.
