Northern NSW dog beaches

Belongil Beach in Byron Bay is the standout northern NSW dog beach. Off-leash before 9am and after 4pm during warmer months. The combination of the beach culture, the cafe strip nearby, and the quality of the beach itself makes it one of the best dog beach experiences in the state.

Seven Mile Beach at Lennox Head, about fifteen minutes south of Byron, is off-leash north of the surf club and is one of the most iconic stretches of dog beach in NSW. Wider and longer than Belongil with a dramatic headland backdrop.

Brunswick Heads has calmer creek and ocean beach access. The town has a quieter pace than Byron Bay and is worth knowing about for a more relaxed northern NSW dog beach experience.

Mid-North Coast

Coffs Harbour has Park Beach off-leash sections. Port Macquarie has Town Beach dog area on the northern end. Both are good stopover beach options on the Pacific Highway drive.

South West Rocks near Kempsey has excellent dog beach access at Horseshoe Bay. One of the more scenic and less visited mid-north coast options.

Water Safety

Dog Life Jacket with Rescue Handle

Best for: Dogs near rivers, lakes and beaches

A flotation vest with a top-mounted rescue handle and reflective strips. Even confident swimmers need one in unfamiliar or moving water. The handle lets you lift your dog out fast.

Sydney dog beaches

Sirius Cove in Mosman is the best harbour dog beach in Sydney. Protected from ocean swell, clear water, sandy foreshore, and well-established off-leash culture.

Taylors Bay near Mosman is smaller and quieter. Balmoral Beach has off-leash sections at specific times.

The northern beaches councils have more generous dog access than the eastern beaches. Curl Curl, Freshwater, and several other northern beaches have off-leash sections at specific times. Always check the specific council rules before visiting as Sydney dog beach rules update regularly.

Sun Protection

Dog-Safe Sunscreen

Best for: Light-coated dogs, beach and summer travel

A dog-safe sunscreen for noses, ears, and exposed skin. Light-coated and short-haired dogs sunburn easily in Australian conditions. Human sunscreen is toxic to dogs, this is formulated for them.

NSW South Coast

The NSW South Coast is genuinely one of the best dog beach destinations in Australia. Less crowded than the north coast, beautiful scenery, and excellent off-leash access.

Broulee Beach has 24-hour off-leash access on the southern half. Tathra Beach is beautiful and accessible. Culburra Beach has off-leash access and good space. Mollymook and Ulladulla have designated dog beach areas.

The entire South Coast rewards slow travel with a dog. Multiple excellent beaches within short drives of each other, good accommodation options, and a genuine community that welcomes dogs.

Paw Care

Dog Paw Balm and Protection

Best for: Hot pavement, rough terrain, cold ground

A protective balm for paw pads against hot bitumen, rough trails, and cold ground. Apply before walks on demanding surfaces and after to soothe and repair.

Quick reference
Do
Check the specific time restrictions for each NSW beach before visiting
Visit the South Coast as a less crowded alternative to the north
Use Belongil Beach and Seven Mile Beach as the centrepieces of any Byron Bay dog trip
Check tick prevention before any coastal bush walking on the north coast
Confirm Sydney beach rules before any specific visit
Consider Brunswick Heads as a quieter alternative to busy Byron Bay
Don't
Assume NSW beach rules are consistent across councils
Enter national park coastal sections expecting dog access
Skip the South Coast, it is genuinely outstanding for dogs
Visit popular Sydney beaches on summer weekend afternoons expecting space
Travel the north coast without tick prevention sorted
Rely on outdated beach access information without checking current rules
