Why Perth is Australia's most dog-friendly city

Perth has more dog beach access than any other major city in Australia. Over 100 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline with off-leash access, most of it available 24 hours year round. The culture around dogs in Perth is relaxed, the beaches are extraordinary, and the infrastructure for dog owners, wash stations, water stations, waste dispensers, is better than anywhere else in the country.

For dog owners visiting from the east coast, Perth's dog beach access is genuinely remarkable. What feels like a privilege in Sydney or Melbourne is simply the standard in Perth.

The best dog beaches

City Beach is the best-equipped dog beach in Perth with dedicated dog wash facilities, water stations, and waste bag dispensers. The water is calm and clear. The adjacent Floreat cafe strip is excellent for post-beach coffee.

North Beach is the local favourite. 24-hour off-leash access, calm shallow water ideal for nervous swimmers, and easy access to the Flora Terrace cafe strip. Consistently recommended by Perth locals as the most relaxed dog beach experience in the city.

Scarborough Beach has off-leash sections and is busier than North Beach with more of a social scene. The Scarborough Beach Pool area is a good landmark for orientation.

Trigg Beach is excellent for dogs who enjoy watching surf without being in it. Off-leash access and good space.

The northern suburb beaches through Watermans Bay, Marmion, and Burns Beach all have good 24-hour off-leash access and are progressively less crowded the further north you go.

Parks and green spaces

Kings Park is one of the great urban parks in the world. Covering 400 hectares of bushland above the Swan River with views of the city and the Darling Range. Dogs are welcome on leash throughout most of Kings Park and the adjacent Botanic Garden areas.

Herdsman Lake Regional Park in the northern suburbs has bird watching, lake walking, and off-leash areas. Sir James Mitchell Park along the Swan River foreshore has good walking and dog access.

Chidley Point Reserve in Mosman Park has harbour views and a relaxed foreshore walk. Multiple good off-leash reserves are distributed throughout Perth's suburbs with council websites providing current access information.

Cafe culture and dining

Perth's cafe culture has developed significantly over the past decade and dogs are generally welcome in outdoor areas across the inner suburbs and beach strips.

The cafe strips adjacent to the dog beaches at City Beach, North Beach, and Scarborough all have multiple dog-welcoming options and are the most logical coffee stops after a morning beach session.

Leederville, Mount Lawley, and Fremantle all have strong inner-suburb cafe cultures with genuinely welcoming outdoor areas. Fremantle in particular has a relaxed attitude toward dogs that makes it one of the best urban dog experiences in Australia.

Day trips from Perth

The Swan Valley wine region is about 30 minutes from central Perth and has good dog-friendly options at several cellar doors. Sandalford Wines and Houghton Wines both welcome dogs in outdoor areas.

Lane Poole Reserve in the Darling Range is about an hour south of Perth and has multiple dog-friendly campgrounds including Baden Powell and Charlies Flat. Excellent for an overnight camping trip with a dog.

Margaret River is three hours south and is the best dog road trip in Australia. Worth the drive for at least a long weekend.
