Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf

The Adelaide Hills are the best starting point for any South Australian dog road trip. Hahndorf is the centrepiece, forty minutes from Adelaide, and the most consistently dog-friendly main street in Australia.

Belair National Park, just thirteen kilometres from Adelaide, is one of the few national parks in Australia that permits dogs on leash on walking trails. An entry fee applies but the combination of native bushland, wildlife including koalas and emus, and good walking tracks makes it worth including.

The winery cellar doors through the Adelaide Hills, Simon Tolley, Nepenthe, Petaluma, are all welcoming to dogs in their outdoor areas.

McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu Peninsula

McLaren Vale is forty minutes south of Adelaide and the most dog-friendly wine region in South Australia. Wirra Wirra allows dogs inside the cellar door which is unusual. DogRidge is built around dogs. The Winery Dog of the Year competition happens here annually.

The Fleurieu Peninsula coastline has excellent dog-friendly beaches at Port Elliot, Middleton, Victor Harbor, and the calmer Gulf St Vincent beaches at Normanville and Aldinga. The Cockle Train heritage railway between Goolwa and Victor Harbor has sections with good dog walking nearby.

The Yorke Peninsula

The Yorke Peninsula is one of the most underrated dog road trip destinations in South Australia. Less visited than the Fleurieu, genuinely beautiful, and with good beach access throughout.

The peninsula has a triangular shape making it ideal for a loop drive. The west coast has good surf beaches. The east coast has calmer waters. Innes National Park at the tip has limited dog access but the surrounding areas are accessible.

Minlaton, Yorketown, and Stansbury all have dog-friendly foreshore areas and accommodation options.

The Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges in outback South Australia is extraordinary scenery and requires careful planning for dogs.

Flinders Ranges National Park does not permit dogs. The surrounding pastoral areas and state heritage areas do. Quorn is a good base town with dog-friendly accommodation options. The Arkaba Station conservation area has some dog-accessible areas.

Travel the Flinders in the cooler months. The outback heat from October through March is genuinely dangerous for dogs. June through August is ideal.

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is accessible via the Sealink ferry from Cape Jervis with your dog. The crossing takes about 45 minutes.

Kangaroo Island has complex dog access rules. Much of the island is national park or conservation land where dogs are prohibited. The areas around Kingscote, Penneshaw, and American River have good dog-friendly beach and foreshore access.

Confirm the specific rules for any area you plan to visit with Kangaroo Island Council before arriving. The complexity is worth managing because the island experience is genuinely extraordinary.
