Why Margaret River is Australia's most dog-friendly wine region

Margaret River has more dog-welcoming cellar doors per kilometre than any other wine region in Australia. Combined with the Cape to Cape route providing the most dog-friendly road trip route in the country and excellent beach access throughout the region, it represents the best possible combination for dog owners who love wine country.

The culture of the region is genuinely welcoming. This is not a region where dogs are tolerated at a couple of cellar doors. It is a region where dogs are expected and welcomed throughout.

The best dog-friendly cellar doors

Swings and Roundabouts has a dedicated dog drinking station, large open spaces, and an atmosphere that is completely relaxed about dogs. One of the most photographed dog-friendly winery experiences in Australia.

Howard Park has beautiful landscaped lawns where dogs are welcome to wander while you taste. The combination of quality wine and genuinely beautiful surroundings makes it outstanding.

The Beer Farm at Metricup is not a winery but deserves inclusion. Wide open spaces, craft beer, wood-fired pizza, and dogs absolutely welcome throughout. One of the best afternoon experiences in the region.

House of Cards and South by South West Wines both welcome dogs in their outdoor areas. Juniper Estate has good outdoor dog access.

Dog beaches in the Margaret River region

Gnarabup Beach near Prevelly is the standout dog beach in the Margaret River region. A beautiful stretch of white sand adjacent to the Gnarabup carpark with good off-leash access.

Smiths Beach at Yallingup is stunning and has good dog access. The rocky headland sections require keeping dogs on leash but the beach sections are excellent.

Busselton on Geographe Bay to the north is about 45 minutes from Margaret River township and has good dog-friendly beach access along the calm bay foreshore.

Accommodation and the region

Margaret River has good self-contained accommodation options that welcome dogs. The rural character of the region means farm stays and country houses are common and most are welcoming to dogs.

The town of Margaret River itself has good base accommodation. Prevelly near Gnarabup Beach is excellent for combining beach and winery access. Yallingup is beautiful and well-located for the northern winery corridor.

Book ahead for Margaret River accommodation especially for weekends and school holidays. The region is popular and pet-friendly options are in demand.
