Why winter is the best time to travel Australia with your dog

June through August is genuinely the best window for travelling Australia with a dog. The dangerous summer heat is gone. Queensland is warm and dry without the humidity. The outback is finally accessible. Popular destinations are less crowded. And your dog can actually enjoy the experience rather than just surviving it.

The trade-off is that southern states get genuinely cold. Tasmania, the Victorian High Country, the Southern Highlands, and even Brisbane nights in July can catch dog owners off guard. A dog that was perfectly comfortable in November needs different gear in July.

This guide covers the dog travel gear that actually makes a difference on Australian winter adventures. Not a generic checklist. The specific products worth having based on your dog's size, the destinations you are heading to, and the real conditions you will encounter.

Safe Travel

Best for: Small and toy breed puppies up to 7kg

Dog jackets: our recommendations by breed size

Not all dogs need a jacket for Australian winter. A Labrador or Husky in the Snowy Mountains in July is genuinely in their element. A Chihuahua, Dachshund, or Maltese in Bright in June needs real warmth.

The rule of thumb: short-coated dogs, small dogs, elderly dogs, and dogs with health conditions all benefit significantly from a quality jacket in southern states and cold nights anywhere in Australia.

We tested and researched across breed sizes so you do not have to guess which option is right for your dog.

Best for small breeds

Small Dog Fleece Jacket

Best for: Dachshunds, Maltese, Chihuahuas, Jack Russells under 5kg

A warm, well-fitted fleece jacket designed for small breeds. Soft inner lining, easy to put on, and machine washable. Perfect for southern state winters and cold Queensland nights. Check the sizing chart carefully for your breed.

For anxious travellers: the ThunderShirt

Before we get to jackets, this one deserves its own section because it solves a different problem entirely.

The ThunderShirt applies gentle constant pressure to your dog's torso, similar to swaddling in human infants. Research and widespread anecdotal evidence both support its effectiveness for dogs with travel anxiety, car stress, and generalised nervousness in new environments.

If your dog finds the car stressful, gets anxious in new accommodation, or generally struggles with the stimulation of travel, the ThunderShirt is the single most effective non-medication intervention available. It also doubles as a light layer of warmth for small dogs in mild conditions.

Editor's pick

ThunderShirt Dog Anxiety Jacket

Best for: Anxious dogs, nervous travellers, all breeds

The most effective non-medication solution for dog travel anxiety. Applies gentle constant pressure that calms most dogs within minutes. Works for car anxiety, new accommodation, storms, and general nervousness. Also doubles as a light layer for small dogs in mild conditions.

Tick and flea protection

This section applies year round but is worth emphasising for winter travel because many dog owners assume ticks are only a summer problem. They are not.

Paralysis ticks on the east coast of Australia are active year round in coastal bushland areas. If your winter road trip takes you through coastal Queensland, NSW, or the Victorian coast, tick prevention is non-negotiable regardless of the season.

A quality flea and tick collar provides ongoing protection without the monthly tablet schedule. Pair it with a tick removal tool so you have the right gear if you do find one.

Year-round protection

Flea and Tick Collar

Best for: All dogs travelling on the east coast

Long-lasting flea and tick collar providing continuous protection without the monthly tablet schedule. Essential for any east coast travel through coastal bushland. Water-resistant so it works through beach swims and rain.

Water bowls: the most underrated travel essential

Every experienced dog traveller has the same answer when asked what single item made the biggest difference to their trips. A good collapsible water bowl.

Dogs dehydrate faster than most owners expect, particularly in the car even with air conditioning running. A bowl that lives in the door pocket and comes out at every stop takes up almost no space and solves one of the most common travel problems instantly.

We recommend having two. One that stays in the car and one in your day bag for walks and cafe stops.

Essential gear

Collapsible Portable Dog Bowls

Best for: All dogs, every trip

Silicone collapsible bowls that fold flat and fit in any pocket or car door. One for the car, one for your day bag. The single most underrated piece of dog travel gear according to every experienced dog traveller we have spoken to.

Durable option

The dog travel first aid kit

A quality first aid kit is the piece of gear most dog owners skip until they need it. In Australian conditions this is a genuine risk.

Paralysis tick removal tools, bandages, antiseptic, a digital thermometer, and emergency vet contacts are the core items. A pre-assembled kit designed specifically for dogs means you have everything in one place without having to source individual items.

For any trip through coastal bushland, the tick removal tool is the single most important item in the kit. A proper tick hook removes ticks intact without squeezing additional toxin. Standard tweezers do this wrong.

Non-negotiable

Dog First Aid Kit

Best for: All dogs, any trip

A complete pre-assembled first aid kit designed specifically for dogs. Includes tick removal tools, bandages, antiseptic, emergency instructions, and storage case. For any trip through coastal bushland this is the most important item you can pack.

Quick reference
Do
Match jacket warmth to your dog's coat length and size, not just the air temperature
Use tick prevention year round for any east coast coastal travel
Keep a collapsible water bowl accessible in the car door at all times
Consider the ThunderShirt before any medication for travel-anxious dogs
Pack a first aid kit with a tick removal tool for any coastal bush travel
Check that jackets fit properly, too tight restricts movement, too loose offers no warmth
Don't
Assume ticks are only a summer problem on the east coast
Skip water stops because you have a full bowl at the destination
Buy a jacket based on look alone without checking the sizing chart for your breed
Leave first aid kit packing until the day before departure
Use standard tweezers for tick removal
Over-rug a thick-coated breed that does not need the extra warmth
