Registration and microchipping in the ACT

In the ACT pet laws are governed by the Domestic Animals Act 2000. All dogs and cats must be microchipped and registered with Access Canberra, the ACT government's service delivery agency.

ACT registration is annual. The ACT has a centralised registration system unlike the council-by-council systems in most states.

When visiting the ACT from another state your existing microchip and registration are accepted. For permanent relocation you must register your pet with Access Canberra within a specified period.

Leash laws in the ACT

Dogs must be under effective control in public places in the ACT. The ACT has a well-distributed network of off-leash parks and areas across its suburbs.

Centennial Park does not exist in the ACT but Canberra has equivalent large open spaces including the Stromlo Forest Park area and multiple suburban off-leash reserves.

The ACT Government website maintains a current list of designated off-leash areas. Weston Park, Dickson Off-leash Area, and several other reserves are popular options.

Cat containment in the ACT

The ACT has mandatory cat containment requirements applying across the entire territory. Cats must be contained to their owner's property at all times, 24 hours a day.

This is one of the strictest cat containment regimes in Australia. When travelling through the ACT with a cat, your cat must be kept inside or in an appropriate enclosure at all times. This applies regardless of what the accommodation property offers.

The 24-hour containment requirement reflects the ACT's commitment to protecting native wildlife including gang-gang cockatoos and other Canberra region species.

Lake Burley Griffin

Lake Burley Griffin has periodic blue-green algae blooms particularly in summer. Blue-green algae is toxic to dogs and can cause rapid organ failure.

Always check the ACT Government's current algae alert status before any Lake Burley Griffin visit with a dog. When algae warnings are in place keep dogs completely away from the water.

The lake foreshore walking path is otherwise excellent for dogs on leash and is one of the great urban dog walking experiences in Australia.

Namadgi National Park and reserves

Namadgi National Park covers much of the ACT's south and west. Dogs are not permitted on walking tracks within Namadgi National Park.

The ACT has various nature reserves and rural areas outside the national park where dogs may be permitted on leash. Check the ACT Parks and Conservation Service website for current access conditions.

The Murrumbidgee River Corridor has walking and cycling paths where dogs are welcome on leash.
