Registration and microchipping in SA
In South Australia pet laws are governed by the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995. All dogs and cats must be microchipped and registered with their local council.
SA registration is annual through local councils. Registration fees vary and are typically lower for desexed animals. The SA Dog and Cat Management Board oversees pet management across the state.
When travelling to SA from another state your existing microchip and registration are generally accepted for short visits. For permanent relocation you must register with your new SA council.
Leash laws in SA
Dogs must be under effective control in public places in SA. In practice this means on a leash unless in a designated off-leash area.
Off-leash areas are designated by individual councils and vary across SA. Adelaide's metropolitan councils have a network of off-leash parks. Regional councils vary considerably.
The SA Dog and Cat Management Board provides resources about responsible dog ownership but individual council websites are the authoritative source for specific off-leash locations.
Cat management in SA
Cat management in SA varies by council. The Dog and Cat Management Act gives councils the power to introduce cat containment requirements in their areas.
Many SA councils have cat curfews requiring cats to be contained overnight. Some councils have introduced 24-hour containment requirements particularly in coastal and bushland areas.
When travelling through SA with a cat check the containment requirements for each council area you plan to stay in. Adelaide Hills councils and coastal councils often have stronger containment requirements than metropolitan areas.
Belair National Park
Belair National Park near Adelaide is one of the very few national parks in Australia that permits dogs on leash on walking trails. A vehicle entry fee applies.
This is genuinely unusual. Most Australian national parks prohibit dogs entirely. Belair's dog-friendly trails are worth specifically planning around for SA visitors.
Check the SA National Parks website for current conditions and any seasonal restrictions that may apply.
Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is accessible via the Sealink ferry with your dog. The island has complex dog access rules. Much of Kangaroo Island is national park or conservation land where dogs are prohibited.
The areas around Kingscote, Penneshaw, and American River have dog-friendly access. Confirm the specific rules for any area you plan to visit with Kangaroo Island Council before arriving.
The complexity of Kangaroo Island dog access is worth managing specifically because the island experience is genuinely extraordinary.
SA pet laws are governed by the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 and individual council by-laws. Always verify current rules with the relevant council. Write to us at hello@pawtrips.com.au if you find information that needs updating.
