Why Cavoodles travel so well

Cavoodles, a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, combine the gentle temperament of the Cavalier with the intelligence and adaptability of the Poodle. The result is a dog that is genuinely excellent at navigating new environments.

They are small enough to be welcome in more places than large breeds. They are social enough to handle the crowds and stimulation of popular destinations. They are intelligent enough to settle into new routines quickly. And they are affectionate enough that strangers at cafes actively seek them out.

A Cavoodle on a road trip is a social experience. Everywhere you stop, someone wants to meet your dog. Factor this into your schedule.

Pack This First

Separation anxiety

The Cavalier side of the Cavoodle means separation anxiety is relatively common in the breed. A dog that is bonded closely to their owner can struggle when left alone in unfamiliar accommodation.

For travel this means: choose accommodation where your dog can be with you most of the time, or where you have tested that they settle alone before leaving them for extended periods.

A Cavoodle that is used to being alone at home may still struggle in unfamiliar accommodation. Their own bedding, familiar scent, and a long-lasting chew are the best tools for managing this on the road.

Legal Requirement

Dog Car Seatbelt Harness

Best for: All dogs travelling by car

In most Australian states dogs must be restrained in a vehicle. A quality harness clips into the seatbelt and keeps your dog safe in sudden stops. Look for crash-tested padded options.

Grooming on the road

Cavoodles require regular grooming. On short trips this is manageable with a daily brush. On longer trips, a grooming appointment partway through keeps their coat in good condition.

Before any extended trip, book a grooming appointment as close to departure as possible. Research grooming salons at your destination or major stops along your route.

Beach trips require extra attention. Sand and salt water mat Cavoodle coats quickly. Rinse thoroughly after every beach visit and brush before the coat dries.

Made in Australia

Australian Made Dog Calming Supplement

Best for: Anxious and stressed dogs

An Australian-made calming powder mixed into food daily. Supports anxiety reduction through natural ingredients. Most effective used consistently before and during travel.

Best destinations for Cavoodles

Cavoodles suit any destination with good cafe culture and moderate walking terrain.

Noosa is exceptional for Cavoodles. The cafe scene on Hastings Street and Noosaville, the flat foreshore walks, and the gentle beach conditions are all perfectly calibrated to a Cavoodle's preferences.

Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills is outstanding. The entire main street is walkable, the cafes are welcoming, and the pace is ideal.

The Mornington Peninsula winery culture, particularly the dog-friendly cellar doors and Miss Drew's Dog Cafe, is exactly the environment Cavoodles are built for.

Byron Bay suits Cavoodles well for the cafe culture and gentle beach access. The foreshore from Treehouse on Belongil to the main beach is a genuine Cavoodle highlight reel.

Health considerations

Cavoodles inherit health tendencies from both parent breeds. The Cavalier side brings a risk of heart conditions, particularly Mitral Valve Disease, which affects a significant proportion of Cavaliers. The Poodle side is generally robust.

For travel, the heart condition risk means a vet check before any extended trip is worth doing for older Cavoodles. Exercise in the heat should be managed carefully for any Cavoodle showing heart condition symptoms.

Ear health is also worth monitoring. Cavoodles have drop ears that trap moisture, making ear infections common after swimming. Dry ears thoroughly after every swim.

Quick reference
Do
Use Cavoodles for cafe-culture destination days, they are the perfect companion
Book grooming appointments before and during any extended trip
Rinse and brush after every beach visit to prevent coat matting
Dry ears thoroughly after swimming to prevent ear infections
Test alone-time tolerance in new accommodation before leaving for extended periods
Factor in the social stops, everyone will want to meet your Cavoodle
Don't
Skip grooming preparation for long trips
Leave a separation-anxious Cavoodle alone in unfamiliar accommodation without testing first
Neglect ear drying after beach and swim sessions
Skip the vet check for older Cavoodles with known heart condition history
Underestimate how social and welcoming these dogs make a travel experience
Over-exercise in heat, Cavoodles are more heat tolerant than flat-faced breeds but still need management
