Why Golden Retrievers are excellent travel dogs

Golden Retrievers combine a genuinely gentle temperament with physical capability and a deep love of water and outdoor environments. They adapt well to new places, settle quickly in new accommodation, and are reliably friendly with strangers, other dogs, and children.

For Australian travel this translates to a dog that is welcome at almost every dog-friendly destination, handles beach, bush, and winery environments with equal enthusiasm, and makes every stop more enjoyable for the people around them.

The primary management considerations for Golden Retrievers in Australia are heat, given their heavy double coat, shedding, and the breed's elevated cancer risk which makes regular health monitoring important.

Pack This First

Collapsible Dog Water Bottle with Bowl

Best for: All dogs, every trip

A water bottle with a built-in fold-out bowl so you can hydrate your dog at any stop. Fits in a car door pocket or day bag. One of the most-used items on any trip.

Heat management

Golden Retrievers have a dense double coat that insulates them well in cold conditions and traps heat in warm conditions. In Australian summer heat they require careful management.

The same rules apply as for all dogs: exercise before 8am and after 5pm, shade and water at all stops, never in a parked car. For Golden Retrievers the heavy coat means these rules apply at lower temperatures than for short-coated breeds.

Golden Retrievers love swimming and water is one of the best cooling mechanisms for the breed. A morning swim followed by a shaded rest is an excellent pattern for summer travel days.

Do not clip a Golden Retriever's coat in the belief that it will keep them cooler. The double coat regulates temperature. Clipping disrupts this and increases the risk of sunburn on previously covered skin.

Water Safety

Dog Life Jacket with Rescue Handle

Best for: Dogs near rivers, lakes and beaches

A flotation vest with a top-mounted rescue handle and reflective strips. Even confident swimmers need one in unfamiliar or moving water. The handle lets you lift your dog out fast.

Shedding on the road

Golden Retrievers shed significantly. In a car over a road trip this accumulates rapidly. Pack a quality lint roller, a seat cover for your car, and accept that your accommodation will have some golden fur in it by the time you leave.

A good brush before and during the trip reduces the amount of loose fur being deposited everywhere. Most accommodation that welcomes dogs expects some fur. The owners who leave accommodation in a reasonable state are the ones who ensure dogs remain welcome.

Heat Management

Self-Cooling Pet Mat

Best for: Summer travel, brachycephalic breeds

A pressure-activated cooling mat that needs no water or power. Gives your dog somewhere to regulate their temperature in the car and at accommodation. Essential for warm weather travel.

Best destinations for Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers suit beach destinations with swimming access above almost anything else.

City Beach in Perth is outstanding for Golden Retrievers. The off-leash access, the gentle ocean swimming, and the dog wash facilities make it one of the best beach experiences for the breed in Australia.

Noosa Spit and Marcus Beach on the Sunshine Coast suit Golden Retrievers perfectly. The combination of beach swimming, flat walking, and excellent cafe culture is ideal.

The Mornington Peninsula bay beaches are calm and suitable for Golden Retrievers year-round. The combination of gentle swimming and excellent accommodation options makes it one of the better Golden Retriever destinations in Victoria.

Health awareness

Golden Retrievers have an elevated cancer risk compared to most breeds. The most common cancers affecting Golden Retrievers include hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma. Regular vet checks and owner awareness of unusual lumps, lethargy, or weight changes are important.

For travel this means: a vet check before any extended trip for older Golden Retrievers, awareness of what is normal for your individual dog, and not dismissing changes in energy or appetite as simply tiredness from travel.

Quick reference
Do
Prioritise beach and swimming access in destination choices
Exercise before 8am and after 5pm in summer
Pack a quality lint roller and car seat cover
Brush regularly during longer trips to manage shedding
Rinse and dry the coat after salt water swims
Schedule vet checks before extended trips for older Goldens
Don't
Clip the coat thinking it will help with heat
Underestimate how quickly a heavy-coated dog can overheat in Australian summer
Skip exercise because the day is warm, adjust the timing instead
Ignore changes in energy or appetite during travel in older Golden Retrievers
Forget the lint roller, your car will thank you
Leave a Golden Retriever in a parked car in warm weather even briefly
