Why Maltese travel well
Maltese are small enough to be welcome in more accommodation and more cafes than almost any other breed. Their size means weight restrictions at accommodation properties rarely apply. Their elegant appearance and gentle temperament make them welcome at outdoor dining areas and social destinations.
Despite their delicate appearance, Maltese are reasonably confident in new environments. They settle into new accommodation quickly and are genuinely good social companions for cafe culture and foreshore walking.

Grooming on the road
The Maltese coat requires regular attention. The long white coat mats readily if not brushed daily and picks up dirt, sand, and debris from travel environments.
For extended trips, a shorter puppy cut significantly reduces grooming maintenance. Many owners clip their Maltese before a long road trip specifically to make the grooming manageable on the road.
If keeping the coat long, daily brushing is non-negotiable. Book a grooming appointment before departure and research groomers at your destination for trips longer than three weeks.
Tear staining can worsen in new climates and water sources. Carry tear stain wipes and maintain the eye area cleaning routine from home.
Dog Car Seatbelt Harness
In most Australian states dogs must be restrained in a vehicle. A quality harness clips into the seatbelt and keeps your dog safe in sudden stops. Look for crash-tested padded options.

Heat considerations
The white coat of a Maltese absorbs heat differently from darker coated breeds but they are still vulnerable to heat in Australian conditions. Their small body mass means they can overheat faster than larger dogs.
Apply the same summer rules as for all small dogs. Exercise before 8am and after 5pm. Never in a parked car. Shade and water at all times. The seven second pavement test applies and ground-level heat affects small dogs more than large ones.
Best destinations
Maltese suit cafe culture and gentle walking destinations almost perfectly. Their size, temperament, and appearance make them ideal companions for the kind of relaxed exploration that defines the best Australian dog travel experiences.
Noosaville foreshore, Hahndorf main street, the Mornington Peninsula winery culture, and Byron Bay cafe strips are all outstanding Maltese destinations. The combination of outdoor dining, flat walking, and welcoming culture suits them precisely.
Beach access is enjoyable for Maltese but the coat management after salt water requires rinsing and brushing. Calm shallow beach areas are preferable to surf.
Dog Paw Balm and Protection
A protective balm for paw pads against hot bitumen, rough trails, and cold ground. Apply before walks on demanding surfaces and after to soothe and repair.
