The genuine advantages of travelling with a small dog

Small dogs are welcome in more places than large dogs in Australia. Accommodation properties that have size limits are accessible. Cafes that hesitate about large breeds are relaxed about a small dog. Airlines that permit in-cabin travel for small pets open a different set of travel options entirely.

In terms of practical logistics, small dogs are easier to manage in cars, easier to carry when terrain demands it, and easier to accommodate in the widest range of lodging.

The social experience of travelling with a small dog is also different. People are less intimidated and more openly affectionate. Every stop becomes a social opportunity.

Predator awareness in Australia

This is the section specific to small dogs that owners need to know before travelling Australia.

Wedge-tailed eagles are Australia's largest bird of prey with a wingspan up to 2.3 metres. They are opportunistic hunters and small dogs, particularly very small breeds, can be perceived as prey. This is not a common occurrence but it happens. In open country and high country areas where eagles are present, be aware of aerial activity.

Large dogs and dog aggression is a more common practical concern. A small dog approached by an off-leash large dog can be injured even in play. At off-leash beaches, assess the temperament of other dogs before letting your small dog off leash in their vicinity.

Snakes are a risk for all dogs but small dogs have less body mass to absorb venom and can deteriorate faster after a snake bite. Keep small dogs on leash in snake territory and watch for snake activity carefully.

Water Safety

Dog Life Jacket with Rescue Handle

Best for: Dogs near rivers, lakes and beaches

A flotation vest with a top-mounted rescue handle and reflective strips. Even confident swimmers need one in unfamiliar or moving water. The handle lets you lift your dog out fast.

Legal Requirement

Dog Car Seatbelt Harness

Best for: All dogs travelling by car

In most Australian states dogs must be restrained in a vehicle. A quality harness clips into the seatbelt and keeps your dog safe in sudden stops. Look for crash-tested padded options.

Temperature management

Small dogs feel temperature extremes more acutely than large dogs. Less body mass means they cool down faster in cold conditions and can overheat faster in direct sun despite being closer to the ground.

In cold destinations like Tasmania, the Blue Mountains, and Bright in winter, small dogs may need a coat for outdoor activities. Their comfort threshold in cold conditions is lower than their owners often expect.

In summer heat, the pavement temperature risk is higher because small dogs are closer to the reflective surface. The seven second hand test applies but small dogs are more exposed to ground-level heat radiation than large dogs. Early morning walks on cool surfaces are the right approach.

Joint Protection

Foldable Dog Car Ramp

Best for: Senior, large and small dogs

A lightweight foldable ramp supporting up to 90kg. Protects joints from repeated jumping in and out of the car. Reflective strip for early morning and evening loading.

Car and accommodation setup

A ramp or steps for car access is worth having for any small dog. Repeated jumping from car height to the ground puts stress on small joints over a long trip.

In the car, a secured carrier or a crash-tested harness appropriate for their size is both legal and safe. Small dogs can be injured in car accidents even in minor collisions if they are unsecured.

For accommodation, check the pet fee structure. Some properties charge the same fee regardless of pet size. Others have tiered fees. Confirm any size restrictions before booking.

Best destinations for small dogs

Small dogs suit destinations where the scale of the experience matches their size. Cafe culture, village walking, foreshore strolls, and gentle beach access rather than extended bush walks on demanding terrain.

Noosaville and the Noosa foreshore are outstanding for small dogs. The scale is right, the surfaces are manageable, and the cafe culture is perfect.

Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills is ideal for small dogs. The flat main street, the outdoor dining, and the welcoming attitude make it one of the best small-dog destinations in Australia.

The Mornington Peninsula bay beaches are calm and shallow. Perfect for small dogs to swim safely without surf.

Quick reference
Do
Use the wider accommodation access that small size provides
Be aware of large dog temperaments at off-leash areas before letting your small dog approach
Pack a dog coat for cold destinations
Use a ramp for car access to protect joints
Apply the pavement temperature test more conservatively given ground-level heat exposure
Consider a dog life jacket for any water activity
Don't
Let your small dog off leash near large unknown dogs without assessing temperament first
Underestimate how quickly small dogs feel temperature extremes in both directions
Allow small dogs to jump repeatedly from car height without a ramp
Take very small breeds to open country areas with known eagle activity without supervision
Assume all dog-friendly accommodation has no size restrictions
Over-push terrain that is demanding for a small dog's stride length
